Black & White Typography Canvas // DIY

I took a commercial art class in high school and absolutely loved it, so I appreciate anything with beautiful typography.

I wanted to make some art to hang in my room (the concrete brick walls are a little sad!) so I decided to make a chalkboard-inspired black and white canvas painting.

While I have pretty darn good handwriting (thanks, grandma!) I'm not that good, so I designed the word layout and then traced them and painted over the tracing. You can have basically zero artistic skill and still do this, I promise!

Read on to learn how!

SUPPLIES:
-Canvas
-Black acrylic paint
-White acrylic paint
-White paint pen
-On hand: computer, printer, pencil, tape, etc.

HOW:

1. Design your typography. Then, print it off and have it blown up at an office supply store to the size of your canvas.

The words I used are from the song "Hosanna" by Hillsong United (it's awesome!) If I had Illustrator on my laptop, I would have used that because it's the bomb, but I don't, so I used powerpoint to design it. If you want a copy for your own personal use, feel free to shoot me an e-mail at elementalcarbon12(at)gmail(dot)com and I would be glad to send you back an attachment of it.

To get a bunch of interesting, free fonts, I used dafont.com, which I highly recommend.

2. Color the back of your paper with pencil. (This is done so that when you trace over the letters in the next step, the pencil will transfer to the canvas and you are left with an outline of the letters).

3. Tape down your paper to the canvas and trace over the letters.

4. Take off the paper and make sure you can see all the lines you made.

5. Fill in with white acrylic paint. This is a little tedious, but oh so worth it! You can use regular acrylic paint found at your local craft store or you can use a white paint pen, which makes the process go a little faster.

And you're done!
